D. C. Poulton & Sons was founded in 1888 as a builders and undertakers by David Charles Poulton. The business was based at 150 High Street, Epping and was one of the first shops to have electricity.
David Poulton had three sons, unfortunately one of whom he lost during the First World War at 17 years of age. George and William, David's other sons, joined the business after leaving school during the First World War Years.
Over time the business grew steadily and became the first Funeral Directors in the area to have a motorised hearse, however, at the time because not everyone liked the idea or trusted the reliability of a motor the use of a horse drawn continued.
George and William took over managing the business in the early 1930s and witnessed a busy period with the arrival of the Second World War. The Poulton's business was awarded a contract with the Air Ministry to supply coffins and repatriate the deceased airmen who lost their lives in raids which had left from North Weald and surrounding airfields.
In the early 1950s Howard Poulton, third generation family member, joined the business and apart from a stint of National Service, Howard has worked in the business all his life. In the early 1960s Howard's brother Roger joined the family business.
In 1957 the business relocated to the current premises at Clarks Lane, Epping and has branches on Chapel Hill in Stansted and on High Street in Ongar.
In the late 1990s Howard and Roger took a step back and today Howard, although semi-retired, continues to be active within the business conducting funerals as and when families request.
At D. C. Poulton we aim to provide a service based on our long established experience and traditional family values whilst understanding the changing wishes of today's community.
